Obituary of Douglas Frederick Matthies

Douglas Frederick Matthies (GE Doug) age 65 of Melbourne, FL passed away unexpectedly on April 10, 2024, at his home. He was born on June 21, 1958, in El Paso, Texas, to David and Lillian Matthies.

 

Doug was baptized in El Paso, Texas and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Kiel. He attended Kiel Public Schools and graduated from Kiel High School. He then attended Madison Area Technical College. Doug worked for GE for 25 years and had been working at Agility Health for the past eight years as an MRI technician.

 

Doug’s hobbies included golfing, fishing, hunting, playing sheepshead, driving his mustang, music, concerts, attending Indy 500 and Road America races. He was an avid collector and passionate sports fan. He especially enjoyed cheering for and supporting  Wisconsin teams. Doug enjoyed traveling for work and meeting new people all around the world. He easily made friends everywhere he went. His favorite destination was his childhood hometown, Kiel, where he often visited to spend time with family and friends. He took great joy in spoiling his nieces and nephews every chance he could. Wherever he was “GE Doug” enjoyed a Jack and Coke.

Doug always supported local businesses by bringing Wisconsin cheese and brats to his friends in Florida and Florida citrus fruit to family and friends in Wisconsin.

 

Doug is survived by his father David, his siblings Duane (Darcy) Matthies, Darryll (Debbie) Matthies, Loni (Thomas) Gerlach, Becky (Dan) Meyer, nieces and nephews Emily Matthies (Justin Needler), Allison (Josh) Schultz, Courtney Matthies, Derek (Jessica) Matthies, Nicole (Caleb) Schmitt, Kimberly (Evan) Domine, Rachel (Nicolas) Dickerson, Tommy Gerlach, Ashley (Logan) Paschke, Brittany (Jayson) Kohlmann, Melissa Meyer (Fiancé Shae Ruelle), Andie Meyer, great nieces and nephews Cruse Needler, Tyler Schultz, Dawson Matthies, Bentley Austin, Brinley Domine, Brayden Domine, and Grayson Kohlmann. Doug is preceded in death by his mother Lillian, grandparents Frederick and Irma Rabe, Harold and Inge Matthies.


Memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday May 18, 2024 at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt-DeTroye Funeral Home (815 6th St. Kiel) There will be no visitation prior to the Funeral Home Service. A Celebration of Life for Doug will take place following that service from 12:00pm until 4:00pm at Millhome Supper Club (16524 Lax Chapel Rd) Please use the Main Entrance. The family will greet everyone at Millhome.

In Lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Doug’s name.
